Bhadohi is an agrarian district with 69960 ha geographical area under cultivation out of which 57262 ha (82%) area is under irrigation. Seventy per cent of the people are dependent upon agriculture. The scenario of land holding is dominated by small and marginal farmers. The economy of Bhadohi district is based mainly on agriculture. Including the seasons of kharif and rabi a total area 48291 ha and 49790 ha respectively has been put under various crops in district. Bhadohi district is falling in eastern plains agro-climatic region.
A. Crop Sector
Bhadohi district like many other districts in the country is agrarian and out of 103037 ha of the reported area of district 69960 ha is arable land. Major food/commercial and plantation crops grown in the district are wheat, paddy, jawar, bajra, bengal gram, pulses, oilseeds and vegetables. Agro-climatic conditions of the district are suitable for commercial cultivation of fruits (Mango, Guava and Citrus).
The annual milk production of the district is 4.40 lakh litres which provides 139 gm per person per day as against the per capita availability of 119 ml at national level. Sheep, goat and piggery: Generally sheep, goat and piggery are considered to be poor men occupation. But the myth is now shading away. There is lot of demand goat/pig meat in the district. Sheep rearing is done not only for wool but for valuable wool also. There is good demand of sheep wool in Varanasi. There is demand of Barbari and Jamunapari goats in the district. The estimated annual production of meat is 2.45 Lakh kgs/ annum.
The estimated annual production of egg is 159 lakh which works out to be 6 eggs per person per year. Lack of insufficient market is one of the of the major constraints. C. Fisheries: Fish is the cheapest and most easily digestible animal protein. Fishery has emerged as source of supplementary income in the district. There are 876 ponds which have 1020.25 ha area. Maximum ponds, 266 are in Suriyava and 251 ponds are in Bhadoi block. Estimated annual production is 2500q/annum.
